Which Shadows Over Innistrad Black cards will be best for you to play during the prerelease?

Shadows Over Innistrad is coming soon and if you are going to be playing in the prerelease, here’s a few things you need to know.

If you haven’t watched my thoughts on Shadows Over Innistrad White cards or Blue cards you can see them here and here:

So what common and uncommon cards are best in black?

Black has a lot of cards that will help you get things in your graveyard, but I still don’t think that’s the way I’ll be winning. So here are the cards I see as the strongest.

Accursed Witch at first glance this looks like a terrible card. Anything that makes it easier for your opponent to destroy your creature is normally bad. But this is a flippy and when it transforms, each turn is a countdown to your opponents doom.

Alms of the Vein is a very straightforward 3 drop for a 3 life switch. But what makes this really cool is that as a madness card it only costs one black. Pretty bad.

Farbog Revenant is the ultimate skulk. It’s a 1/3 for 3 which generally isn’t good, but lifelink is a bonus. And skulk just makes it a plain nasty. As a common, I hope I get a lot if I’m going to be playing black because I don’t see a down side.

Ghoulcaller’s Accomplice is just a good card. 2/2 for 2 is very fair, but to bring back a zombie later in the game is great. You just have to remember to trigger this ability.

Heir of Falkenroth is another flippy that is very fair starting out, and turns nasty once you discard a card. Keep in mind that if you get mana flooded, you can discard a land to transform Heir of Falkenroth. You don’t have to discard a creature.

Indulgent Aristocrat is a 1/1 for 1… with lifelink??? Wow. You can pay an extra 2 with a sacrifice creature to boost him and your other vampires. Really nice.

Rancid Rats is a 2 drop for a 1/1 that also has deathtouch which is pretty good. But when you add the skulk this gets really nasty real quick. I would love to put 6 or more in my deck.

And finally Sinister Concoction is really cool if you are trying to get that delirium state. There is a lot you have to do to get it to work, but it’s a great removal spell.

I think Black is the color to play in Shadows Over Innistrad set. And once again there are really no bad rares, but if you are expecting Triskaidekaphobia to win the game it will be very difficult to get your opponent to 13. I do like the idea, I just don’t think it will work during the prerelease.
